They also give some reason like observing big decline of users in past days and, to improve quality of other products by driving efforts from others. But personally I think theses excuses are not appropriate for such a giant company. In announcement they also pleas to find other rss alternatives with an option to download your archive (plus subscribers) via Google Takeout.
After this announcement number of rss providers with similar features or with aim to provide them in future are jumped are wake up, and starts their publicity. And for taking advantage of this golden opportunity of becoming best alternative of Google Reader, just few hours ago Digg Announced to build and release their own reader in mid of 2013.
